My Favorite Keys of Success to Serve & Volley in Doubles

John Mills Photo
John Mills, USPTA

  • Serve into the body and down the middle, less to the outside. Cut off the angle of the return.

  • As soon as you serve, run in four steps assuming your serve is in. If you have not heard an "out" call after your fourth step keep moving in.

  • Right before your opponent makes the return make a split step. This will teach you not to run through the first volley and help you with a quicker change of direction

  • The first "80 %" rule -- Assume that 80% of the time your opponent will force you to make contact with the first volley below your waist.

  • The second "80%" rule -- You should return the first volley 80 % of the time soft and low crosscourt.

  • Try not to send your opponent too wide with your first volley. This will cut down his or her ability to return with too much angle.

  • Look for the first high ball to win the point.

  • Stay in the point if your receive a low ball. Do not try to force the point with the low ball.

  • The "100 %" rule -- After hitting any overhead, move up toward the net to attack.

    Good luck on the court!
