You Don't Need A Gym

John Mills Photo
John Mills, USPTA

After all that has happened, I think everyone knows that you "don't need a gym:"

  • Use your home or public parks in your proximity

  • Start collecting small weights, yoga matt, stretch bands, etc., anything you like

  • Start small, then build on that later

  • Start walking, try to walk a mile in under 20 minutes. Walking your dog counts!

  • Learn Yoga online or YouTube or learn to do gentle stretching

  • Find a place at your house, inside or out, to keep your fitness equipment

  • Be consistent, strive for 30 minutes, three times a week at first. Designate a specific time of the day that works with your schedule

  • Get a workout buddy to hold each other accountable and inspire each other

  • Add biking, hiking, gardening, swimming to your routine. Spice it up a little!

  • Monitor your diet, get plenty of rest and touch base with all your friends

I have not gone back to my gym in over 2 years. Do I miss it? Yes! However, I am just as fit and happy. I do miss seeing my friends from the gym. Now, I see my friends on the public pathways and sidewalks.

I do weights at least 2 times a week, I ride my bike for 100 miles each week and I walk 3-4 miles in the morning with my wife and dog. I have not just maintained my conditioning, but I have improved it without going to the gym.

With my activities outside the gym and maintaining my teaching schedule I easily hit over 15,000 steps daily. I bought a blood pressure monitor for home use.

I have a visit with my internist twice a year, my wife and I are "flexitarian," vegetarian, no red meats with Salmon once a week. We don't drink alcohol anymore or carbonated drinks and I have never smoked. These are a lot of ways to get fit without a gym!

Good luck on the courts!
