[tennisbiz] Re: Operation Spec.

Mike-

Having a set of manuals is good because it gives people an idea of what is
expected of them. Keep in mind though, we manage money, we manage
corporations but we lead people. Good leadership is the key to having a
great club. Having manuals without good leadership won't go very far. The
pros or other employees will know the manual but, if they see the leadership
not following it, they will realize it is just lip service and a joke. Thus
the manual is a waste. Good leadership allows for personalities, etc. which
makes up the club or the organizations. Not everyone is a robot but a
living, changing, growing part of the organization that adds their own spice
to the formula of success. The leadership comes from the top. It could be
the owner, the manager, etc. The organization will take on what that person
shows through their leadership.

You mention that the pros are more excited, etc. because of the organization
of the manuals. That is great! Keep in mind that the reason for this is
that they believe you care. There was a study done in a car manufacturing
plant. One of the managers decided that they would increase the watt power
of the lights. Make it brighter. Low and behold productivity went up. The
manager was excited. This same manager, after a period of time, decided
that he would turn the watt power down and see what happened. Make it less
bright. Low and behold the productivity went up. The reason why
productivity went up in both situations was that the employees felt
management was thinking about them and cared. The point is letting the
employees be a part of the whole process (manuals, etc.) will add to the
aspect that they buy into the project and feel as if they are a part of it.
They will come up with great ideas that you never thought about.

You have probably already read these books but I will suggest them anyways.
"The One Minute Manager" by Blanchard and Johnson and "In Search of
Excellence" by Peters and Waterman. Good luck on your project and I would
definitely like to see what you have come up with...... if possible.
Thanks!
